Tie Dye
The teens end of summer reading event was to tie dye. Most of the kids tie dyed t-shirts, one dyed her purse. But the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. Some tied their shirts with rubber bands, some sprayed them, some just dotted them, some did it all. Each shirt was unique. Even the librarians got into the act and each dyed a shirt of their own.
Treasure Hunt
The annual summer reading “Treasure Hunt” which singles the end of the program was Wednesday, August 6th. Starting at 3:00 the kids arrived at the library to be split up into groups for the hunt. There were three groups, spiders, ladybugs and beetles. The teen volunteers painted bugs on the kids to match their group. One library board member sat at each table to to help each group. The teen volunteers were in charge of taking the kids to each location to get a piece of their main club.
Once the groups got all their clues the taped the picture together and turned it over to decode the where abouts of the treasure box. The first group to decode the clue took the teen volunteer and the youngest bug and went to get the treasure box.
Once the box was opened by the winning group everyone got some to the loot. Then the kids sat on the floor to enjoy a snack and drink. While the kids were all sitting down summer reading prizes were handed out.
Richmond Fair Parade
The library had a float in the parade again this year. This year’s theme was “Favorite Song” and I let the kids pick the song.
With a unanimous decision the kids picked “Fishing in the Dark†as their favorite song.
The float had trees, stars, a big yellow moon, green stuff for grass and blue stuff for the river and over 20 kids. The truck pulling the float was playing the CD by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with “Fishing in the Dark” on repeat and the kids just kept singing along. The had a blast.
We won 1st place!!!…
Picnic & Flowers
the week of June 30th there was a picnic and flowers at the library. Tuesday, July 1st the Geography club had picnic food. The group had decided that since summer was so busy and that a lot of people had picnics that was what they wanted to do. It was decided that August will be China since that is where the Olympics are at.
Thursday, July 3rd the kids made plastic flowers. The flowers were made from recycled water and pop bottles. The kids were also given little bug stickers to put on their flowers.
Next up at the library will be the library float in the Richmond parade on Saturday, July 12th.…
Garden Bugs and Little Masks
The week starting June 23rd there were two crafts at the library. The first was on Monday, June 23rd the kids painted ceramic garden bugs. Each child was allowed to choose one of several different bugs to paint. The kids sure have some imagination with the colors they choose.
The second craft was for the older kids. They painted small ceramic masks. Once again each one was painted different. Not one mask looked like the other.
