Summer Reading 2007 is Over
We started in June and finished in August. We have had seed spitting, finger printing, music and crafts a parade and of course a treasure hunt. Programs for the adults and even one for teens only. What a busy summer. Again this year the kids could track their progress by watching the library ceiling. As they read books their face mobile would get more on it. Face for 5 books, eyes for 10 books and so on. Up to 50 books. After 50 they would go to the bulletin board. Teens were tracked by footprints on the wall. The adults were shown on a bulletin board to show every place they read to.
This year there were 38 kids 12 and under who read 1,282 books this summer. We had 12 teenagers and they read a total of 64 books. The adults numbered 16 but they read a total of 235 books. Wow good reading everyone.
This years we also had the guessing jars on the desk. Each Monday a new jar of candy would be put out. Each Friday the winners would be announced. This year winners were: Becky Webb won a jar of mixed candy, Paige Stockard won a jar of M&Ms, Colton McCarty and Chloe LaDuke shared mints, Page Adams and Scooter Kice shared a jar of twister candy, Joyce Toot won a jar of mixed candy, Max Adams won a jar of mixed candy, Justin Springer, Cody McCarty and Colton McCarty shared Dum Dum suckers and Becky Webb won a jar of sours.
The big readers this summer were as follows. Justin Springer of the older kids, 3rd – 6th grade read 70 books this summer. Riley Roll of the younger readers, read 123 books this summer. Damien Geiler and Chloe LaDuke tied for the most books being read to them this summer. The each listened to 145 books this summer.
Puzzles,School Days and Tech Day
We are almost done with summer reading now. July 31st we had the Bi-Folkal kit “Remembering School Days” for the adult ladies in town.
August 1st the kids made their own puzzles. Each child was given a blank puzzle and makers and stencils to make it their own.
August 2nd both the librarians were gone. They were in Topeka attending the annual Tech day to learn what new and upcoming.
Stained Glass or Window Stickers
On Thursday, July 26th the kids were invited to the library to make window stickers or paint stained glass window ornaments.
When more than 15 kids show up in this small library to do a craft you have to offer more than one craft. This time the kids got to either paint a stained glass window ornament or make a window sticker.
The kids here in Richmond seem to really enjoy doing crafts. So this library has done most of it’s summer reading programs this way the past couple of years. It seems to work for us.…
Harry Potter Crafts
The new Harry Potter movie is out! The last Harry Potter book is done!!
In honor of Harry Potter the library had a craft day. On Monday, July 23rd kids were invited for a craft day. The kids made Wizards and Glasses. When the kids were done with their crafts they were given a surprise drink. Butterbeer.

Richmond Library Wins 1st Place
Richmond Public Library had a float in the Richmond Fair Parade again this year. The theme for the parade this year was “Salute America”. The library chose “Richmond Library Salutes America’s Armed Forces” as the title of it’s float.
The Float featured a plane for the Air Force, a tank for the Army, a ship for the Navy and guns for the Marines. Our float won 1st place. Riding our float were area library children and Tina Harkins and Jacob Akes who both served time in Iraq and Kuwait.
