The 2011 Summer Reading Program has ended. This year’s themes were “One World, Many Stories” for the younger kids, “You Are Here’ for the older kids and “Novel Destinations” for the adults. With these themes it was decided to have crafts from around the world this summer. So we made German hats, Japanese Fans and windsocks, Israeli Dreidels, Guatemalan Worry dolls, Chinese lanterns, Australian Didgeridoos and boomerangs, Mexican God’s Eyes, Mediterranean masks,Egyptian silhouette. We also got African Henna tattoos, had a fear factor food challenge with foods from around the world. The Adults painted Patriotic gourds and we tie dyes [which is done in many different countries]. There were also banks and notebooks thrown in just to even things out.
The Summer reading program ran from June 1st until August 10th, there were crafts every Wednesday and every other Friday for everyone. The older kids had some separate days just for them on Thursdays and the Adults had craft on Fridays before the library opened.
This year there were 44 younger kids [up to 5th grade ] signed up and those kids read a total of 1,242 books. There were 16 older kids [6th -12th grade] signed up and these kids read a total of 188 books. We had 14 adults sign up and they read a total of 181 books.
