Tri-Conference 2007

The Richmond Public librarians attended the annual Library Tri-Conference. The conference was in Topeka this year. What did the librarians do at the conference?

They attend workshops about various matters. From what’s new in books to what’s new in technology. Librarians pick which program they want to attend. Since Richmond sends both of their librarians they can attend more programs. They each go to different programs and then put all the paperwork together and bring it back to the library.

There is also some fun at tri-conference. Librarians can socialize with each other, talk about what’s new at each library. See how others are handling similar problems. Then there is “Librarians on Parade”. A Fashion show of what new to wear. This was the second year for this program and both of the Richmond librarians were in the show.

They also cheer their system team on at the “Library Trivia Bee”. NEKLS did not win, but they were not the first team out either.

Guitar Hero’s @ the Library

What is Guitar Hero’s you say? Guitar Hero’s if a very popular play station game. When looking for something new to do for the older kids during spring break this year it was discovered that a few kids liked to play the game. One of our teens volunteered to bring his play station and guitar down to the library.  Since I myself own the game  I brought a second guitar for the kids to use.

Those that showed up seemed to really have fun. The kids had a competition for the highest score on each level. Then the played two player games. Some played against each other and sometimes they played together with one playing base and one playing regular guitar. The kids have asked to do this again and maybe even get a different game. This is something I am thinking about for the summer.

Winner of our little competition were: Chris Moss on the Hard level, Nick Weber on the Medium level and Adrian Morgan on the Easy level

Corn Starch

What happens when you mix corn starch with water? Some of the kids in Richmond found out. Kids come to the library to play in corn starch and water to see what would happen. The kids ran their fingers through it, made balls, rolled it, and just let it run through their fingers. Spring Break has been a busy time at the library.

Racing in the tunnels

Picture 350.jpg

On Wednesday, March 21st @ 3:00 kids were invited to the library to have tunnel races. The library was going to have an obstacle course in the park, but it rained on Tuesday, was windy on Wednesday and was suppose to rain also on Wednesday. So instead we have tunnel racing inside the library.

About 10 kids showed up for this event. But those that did really had fun. The kids raced in two age groups and were timed to see who won. Winners were Riley Roll who made it in 7 seconds, and Abby Adams who made it in 5 seconds. Each young lady beat out a brother by only 1 second.

After the race was done the kids were allowed to just play in the tunnels. The really seemed to enjoy it. A small snack snack was provided. Trophies were given to Riley and Abby.

The Learning Tree

The state of Kansas is having its first “One-state-one-book” program for adults this year. The book that was chosen is “The Learning Tree” by Gordon Parks. The program runs from January 29th through April 30th 2007.

Since this library does not own the book we have interlibrary loaned the book a few times and have been passing it around to those who are interested in reading it.

This library does own a copy of the movie and on Tuesday, March 20th the adults in town were invited to the watch the movie. The movie was shown at the United Methodist Church here in Richmond. Those that attended seemed to enjoy the movie.  Many thanks to the church for letting us use their room.…
